The Midwest Academy, a 35 year old national training institute for progressive organizing, is seeking applicants for a paid summer 2009 community organizing internship to run from June 1 - Aug 7, paying $3900 for ten weeks.
Milwaukee interns will be trained and mentored by the Midwest Academy, and will work with Food and Water Watch (www.foodandwaterwatch.org) in the Milwaukee metro region. You must have housing in the area; it is not provided; the work will also require that you have a car (mileage will be reimbursed). Milwaukee interns will be part of a national team of interns being trained and deployed in various cities this summer.
Internship Description: Interns will receive a week of training similar to the Midwest Academy five-day training. They will learn how organizers choose issues, develop strategy, assess their own organizational power and that of their targets, allies and opponents, recruit constituents, and move into action (Costs for the training, including room/board are covered). During nine weeks in the field, interns will conduct community outreach and organize one or more public meetings, gaining hands-on organizing experience. Interns will receive day-to-day supervision from their placement organizations, and ongoing training and mentoring from Midwest Academy staff. For interns who are interested in pursuing a job in community organizing, we will provide job search assistance at the end of the internship or at college graduation.
To apply: Fill out the Application for Midwest Academy Summer 2009 Internship. Please respond ASAP; we hope to hire for the final positions no later than May 25th. Review of applications is in progress and will continue until positions are filled. Likely candidates will be interviewed via telephone.
Please review the comments from previous interns to see what they had to say about this great opportunity.
