Down Syndrome Clinic Conference: Rising to the Challenge: Supporting Families and Individuals with Down Syndrome Who Have Complex Needs

By any definition Down syndrome is a complex condition. People with Down syndrome can differ markedly from others in their medical, developmental and behavioral characteristics. This workshop is designed for families and caregivers who support individuals-children or adults-with Down syndrome who have more challenging medical, behavioral or mental health conditions.

About the presenter George Capone, MD, is director of the Down Syndrome Clinic at the Kennedy Krieger Institute, Baltimore. He is one of the country’s leading experts and researchers on Down syndrome cases that involve complex behavioral and psychiatric disorders. Dr. Capone will present all sessions.

Instructional objectives

  • Identify examples of complex needs in individuals with Down syndrome.
  • Identify unique and defining features of common behavioral and mental health conditions in individuals with Down syndrome.
  • Identify evidence-based practices for diagnosing and treating individuals with Down syndrome who have developmental and behavioral disorders.
  • Complete and score the aberrant behavior checklist for your child or an adult.
  • Describe various aspects of support for caregivers of individuals with Down syndrome who have complex needs.
